Finding the Presence through Presence

John 6:35-42 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

The last few weeks the Revised Common Lectionary scripture readings use the imagery of bread to convey a deep truth. God coming and giving himself to us in something as thought ordinary as bread. While reflecting on this weeks lectionary reading I was struck by the above verses. In particular, how the crowd misses God in plain sight. Precisely because God was so close. Isn’t God out there, over there, or up there? Surely God isn’t the son of my neighbor, surely God doesn’t come this close, to my village, to my neighborhood. Yet that is exactly how God comes to us. As Paula D’Arcy says, “God comes to us disguised as our life.” And as Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote “Earth’s crammed with heaven, and every common bush afire with God. But only he who sees takes off his shoes; The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.”  Take a second to breath those two quotes in and let them wash over you. Where ever you are right now is Holy Ground and God is present.

Yet, how often are we really here. Really fully present to where God is in our lives, which is always the present moment. This is one gift of contemplation, to be more fully present to the moment, more mindful, thus more alive. To be as Jesus tells us “be awake” and “staying watchful” as “the birds of the air’ and “the lilies of the field”.
